Analyzing the physical mechanisms of space radiation damage and detailing architectural circuit-level countermeasures in cryptographic ASICs.
Space radiation manifests primarily in two ways: cumulative Total Ionizing Dose (TID) from trapped electrons/protons causing threshold voltage shifts, and transient Single Event Effects (SEE) caused by heavy cosmic ray ions. In cryptographic devices, transient faults can be weaponized by environmental conditions to induce mathematical errors that reveal private keys (DFA). SpaceHSM incorporates comprehensive RHBD countermeasures.
Every flip-flop and state register in the SpaceHSM core is triplicated. A high-speed majority voting circuit continually evaluates the three outputs: if one register flips due to an ion strike, the correct value is voted forward and the damaged register is scrubbed in the same clock cycle, guaranteeing zero execution interruption.
SpaceHSM components undergo exhaustive environmental testing compliant with ESA and NASA standards, including thermal vacuum cycling (-55°C to +125°C), high-energy heavy-ion cyclotron irradiation, and random vibration testing to ensure survivability during rocket launch.
